SPACE - KAZAKHSTAN
In 2006, the Kazakhstan Mint achieved a significant milestone by launching the first of 12 bicolor (composite) coins in the "Space" series. These innovative coins feature a unique design with an inner disc made of tantalum and an outer ring of silver. Kazakhstan became the first in the world to use tantalum for coinage, overcoming the challenges associated with its plasticity and adherence to the coining die. In 2011, the Mint secured a patent for this groundbreaking production method and subsequently developed techniques to alter the color of tantalum, showcasing their leadership in the field of commemorative coins.
