The National Bank of Kazakhstan issued the gold Year of the Tiger coin on 5 November 2021 as part of the Oriental Calendar series. The tiger and the date 2022 on the reverse refer to the following calendar year. This gold version has a face value of 500 tenge, weighs 7.78 g and measures 21.87 mm across. It has a proof finish and a mintage of 1,000. The NBK’s release specifies gold fineness of 999/1000.
The coin has twelve sides. Its obverse shows mythological constellation symbols and a stylised sun, together with the denomination and the metal, fineness and weight markings. The country’s name appears in Kazakh and English.
A tiger occupies the centre of the reverse, with the other eleven calendar animals around the inner border. The date 2022 and the series name appear around the perimeter: ШЫҒЫС КҮНТІЗБЕСІ, ВОСТОЧНЫЙ КАЛЕНДАРЬ and ORIENTAL CALENDAR.
The silver issue shares the design and 500 tenge denomination but has different specifications: 925 silver, 31.1 g, a diameter of 38.61 mm and a mintage of 3,000. Metal, weight and size distinguish the two versions. Both were originally supplied in presentation packaging with a numbered NBK quality certificate.
